Who we are

• Waterside House offers safe and confidential Refuge accommodation for women and their children experiencing domestic violence.
• An Outreach service covering Galway city and county is available for women to meet with a worker at a safe location where they can receive support and information on their options.
• The service operates on a 24 hour basis 365 days a year including Telephone support 091 565985
• We operate a children’s service for children who are experiencing domestic violence.
• We offer a Drop- in service for all women seeking information and support in relation domestic violence and related parenting issues.
• We offer support and guidance to women currently experiencing domestic violence and abuse or difficulties after separation i.e. managing partner contact relating to access.

What we do

Safe short term accommodation and one to one confidential support for women experiencing abuse
• Court accompaniment is available for women accessing legal supports.
• Safety planning in relation to domestic violence for all women who contact the service.
• Training and Awareness is available to agencies and professionals on the issue of Domestic Violence
• Dating Abuse information sessions are provided for second and third level students and youth groups.
• Support groups for women who have left an abusive relationship, as well as parenting in the context of domestic violence are run throughout the year.
• Support groups for children are run both in-service and on a community basis
• Counselling for women and play therapy for children are available on a needs basis for those attending the service.

How we do it

We offer advocacy and support with legal issues, social welfare entitlements, housing applications, support with immigration issues.
We offer emotional support, information and accompaniment to a variety of agencies.
We run an empowerment programme for all women staying in the refuge
A community nurse and a GP can be accessed during the stay by women and children.
School placements can be arranged.
Daily childcare is offered for all resident women during set times in the morning and afternoon to enable women to attend appointments. The children’s service provides a programme of support called ‘Helping Hands’ and a community group for children who have experienced domestic violence and abuse called ‘Solas Óg’
Women who have used service can join ‘SURF’ (Service User Refuge Forum) who participate and contribute to refuge life, policies, information booklets or research.
